{Celery Flowers} – before & after
I saw this technique of painting with celery years ago and forgot all about it until the other day when i ran across it somewhere online. Its super easy and makes the cutest little flowers :)
My husband Santi found this antique table a couple weeks ago and i kept thinking that i needed to do something different with the top since its kinda a fun accent table. Its not large enough to be a dining room table (except for a smaller space of course) but it would be really cute in a playroom, patio or even a little girls room.
I figured this would be the perfect piece to try out the flowers.
I gave the table a couple coats of Snow White Milk Paint and then distressed the table with an orbital sander for the top and a sanding block for the legs.
After getting the table ready for the flowers, i went to my craftroom and gathered up a couple bottles of acrylic craft paint. I just poured a little out on a paper plate. It worked best to take my finger and spread the paint out on the plate a little.
Then i took a bunch of celery and cut the end off – this will be the flower. I removed a few of the side stems so the flower looked more uniform.
After testing the flowers out on a scrap piece of wood, i found it best just to dip the celery right in the paint and then stamp on the table. When i stamped it 1st on a paper towel, it took too much paint off. You will just need to play around with it to figure out the best way for you and your project.
I liked how the colors started mixing together. I also made sure to move the celery around just a bit for each stamp so that it didnt look to uniform.
After stamping the entire table and letting it dry for a while, i came back with my orbital sander and distressed the flowers so they were smooth and a little more faded looking.
The final step was giving the table a coat of clear wax and then it was ready to go! The table is so fun and would be a perfect accent piece. Sometimes i worry about doing things that are so taste specific, but you cant always play it safe with every piece of furniture :)
And this celery stamping would be lots of fun on other than just furniture – how about some vintagey looking flowers on tea towels, or on some canvas as cheap art?!
