{Before & After} – custom hutch re-finish

,

>

I recently finished up quite a transformation on a big hutch.

The hutch before had very modern lines and light maple wood – and that wasnt going to work with how my client wanted it transformed.

She sent me some pics of heavily distressed french inspired pieces – so we had to do something to “soften” up this piece of modern furniture.

Before…

I added some trim around the top and bottom part of the top hutch (its the lighter color of wood that i added)

And then i added some braided rope trim around all the drawers

I also added a piece of base molding around the bottom of the cabinet (sorry, forgot the before pic)

After all my trim as added, i primed the entire piece with primer tinted to a dark brown so i could see dark when i distressed it.  Then i had planned on using Old Fashioned Milk Paint (similar to chalk paint)– but i couldnt get the paint to spray well out of my paint gun.  So i ended up using latex paint (i used silver sage by Restoration Hardware).  The color on the trim is Honeymilk by Valspar.

I heavily distressed the entire piece mostly with my cabinet scrapers and then i lightly glazed everything for an aged look.

After…

To distress the piece so it didnt look so smooth and new – i used a hammer, some screws and screwdrivers to make some dents in the wood – just randomly here and there

(Client will add hardware and glass in the doors)

I love how  it turned out!!  And i love that some paint and some molding can COMPLETELY change the look and style of a piece :)

If you dont like it – change it!!!
