Hey!! Today im back with a quick post about a quick way to add a pretty little detail to your painted pieces. This is super easy and quick and adds just the right amount of character to a piece that might be on the plain side. I saw a raised stencil a few years ago, then forgot all about them. But i was reminded of them again when i saw some pieces from Kristin from Tattered Perfection. So i chatted with her about how she went about it, she gave me a few tips and i got on my way to trying it out :) When i 1st tried this, i picked up my stencils from Michaels. They are the Martha Stewart brand. They are ok – but they are really thin. I didnt realize how thin they were until i ordered some from Etsy – the place i ordered […]

I know waxing for some may seem intimidating, especially dark waxing – but honestly its one of the easiest things to do and can make a huge impact. Im a HUGE fan of dark wax, i would say that about 90% of the pieces that i finish are dark waxed. The wax brings out all those incredible details, highlights the highs and lows in a piece of furniture, adds an amazing aged patina and picks up on all those little imperfections for a huge effect in the finished product. Almost every piece i paint, i dont just imagine it in the color that ive picked out for it, i imagine what the dark wax is going to do to that color that i chose. I get most excited when im about to apply that dark wax :) In the pic below – both pieces are painted in a white. The […]

Hey – im back with a quick blog post about how im getting all those cute floral prints on my furniture and on wood! Ive been posting ton of pics on FB lately about these fun florals and lots were asking for a tutorial – so here goes! I saw and bought a piece of scrapbook paper at Hobby Lobby months ago when i was working on another project and the print was some faded florals on barnwood and i loved it. Then i bought some photography backdrops a few months back and it was also the same type of image – and i knew i wanted to recreate it. While looking at something online maybe about a year ago or so, i had come across someone using napkins to cover a shelf or something and that had always been stored in the back of my brain somewhere – so […]
Oh wow – i think i just did a post like a week ago, i must really be on a roll now ;) Except that maybe this post is LONG overdue, like months, maybe even a year! Well, im here now and im gonna tell you all about the final steps to milk paint. This one, we will be talking about clear waxing – i think this is definitely one of the easiest steps, yet i think its the one that so many people get intimidated by. We will also go over dark waxing, but im going to save that for another post. Now – i would LOVE to post a video that would accompany this written post and i will soon, but i haven’t done one yet (i know that many of you would love videos and it helps to see the process in action). My plan is to […]
Its me again!! I just cant keep up with blogging lately – tons of things to post about but just not enough hours in the day! I hope you follow me on facebook – its much easier to post over there and i normally check in and post a couple times throughout the day. ……………………………………… I picked up the most amazing matching set a couple months ago! I got both the buffet and the hutch. At 1st my plans were to paint and sell the buffet and keep the hutch for the basement, but once i got the buffet home i told my husband i just couldn’t get rid of it! So i made room for it in my family room and its perfect :) As soon as i posted a before pic on facebook, i got tons of crap for saying i was going to paint it. But, obviously […]
One of my favorite things ever is the look of old weathered gray wood that’s had years in the sun out to oxidize and produce an amazing patina. But unfortunately its getting harder to find and especially in the size that i need it in. So i had to come up with something else. I’ve been working on some ways to make new wood look aged and finally found a technique/look that i like and what i think most closely resembles old wood. It involves Sweet Pickins Milk Paint in a couple of shades, vinegar and steel wool solution, some stain or glaze (or even dark paint), a couple old paint brushes and some new lumber. Its super easy. Here are some 2×8’s that i am using to create some of my EAT signs that i sell here. I’ve cut my lumber to size and have sanded down to […]
Since starting our new line of Sweet Pickins Milk Paint, we have introduced 3 new colors of paint and are planning on adding a new color each month! Our 1st color that came out is called Sweetie Jane. This has been an extremely popular color! Its a very light and calming blue/green and works well with a lot of other colors. The 2nd color we introduced is called Galvanized. Galvanized is a medium true gray color. I love this color, especially with a dark wax over it. And our newest color is called Moody Blue. Moody Blue is a medium blue with just a little hint of green. I LOVE Moody Blue with a dark wax over it – it gives it more of a green tone and can pass for a turquoise – 2 colors in one!! To see more pics of each color, just click on the name […]
Ive been using shellac for a few years now, clear shellac works perfect for blocking bleed through on painted pieces and is also great for sealing in musty smells on furniture. It goes on clear and dries super fast. Its an awesome product with lots of uses. BUT, about 6 months ago i was playing around as i like to do, and figured out some cool stuff that it does with milk paint. It was purely by accident as all the best discoveries are! I’ve been hesitant to post the info because im still experimenting with it – but i think i have enough info to share with ya now :) DISCLOSURE: For the most part my shellac trick has worked great on the things im going to tell you about. BUT, milk paint still has a tendency to do its own thing even with the shellac and i cant […]
